Innovations in English curriculum- curriculum
The Holy Wonders School revamped the English Curriculum. The new curriculum was launched in academic year 2016-17. It focuses on exposing our children to the English language in a fun and interesting way. New methods and material of instruction have been incorporated to address the language skills.
The new English Curriculum gives a holistic experience of learning to the children, meeting the following objectives:
1. Teach language skills rather than content.
2. Ensure exposure to a variety of stimuli (verbal, visual, auditory, kinesthetic and written).
3. Make English fun and exciting for children to learn this language more willingly and joyfully.
4. Change the attitude from isolating English to integrating English with all activities of the school – projects, plays, etc.
A brief explanation of some of the striking components designed in the new Curriculum is given below:
The children are taught to read using the phrasing technique. Phrasing is an essential skill, required for reading any language. It gives children the time to read at an appropriate pace and with intelligibility. It facilitates understanding of the complete sentence by allowing children to understand the information piece by piece, or ‘phrase by phrase’. This helps them to develop complex sentences in the language and use punctuation correctly. Thus, it benefits the children immensely in their oral as well as written expression.
Punjab has an increasing trend of using the regional language. This leaves our children with negligible opportunities in their day to day lives for them to speak in our Global language, English. Due to this, children hesitate to speak in English. To address this concern, we have introduced an aural-oral curriculum.
The aural curriculum includes a collection of edited Hollywood songs, recorded compilation of contemporary English poetry and short English films. Songs are used to enhance clarity & fluency in speech on one hand and understand moods expressed in English on the other. Poetry exposes children not only to different vocabulary and moods, but also demonstrates them the technique of reciting English poetry. Short films expose children to folktales and mythological events. These movies acquaint children to the traditional Indian lifestyles and culture and help them understand mythological characters, which would otherwise be extremely dull if only learnt about through textbooks.
The oral curriculum includes conjugations to build a sound base for sentence constructs, segmentation to hone the spelling skills, audio-visual presentations to form the basis of conducting thematic discussions in the classroom, conducting games and quiz to develop vocabulary recall and grammar, and time bound group activities and presentations on given topics to develop public speaking skills.
To support and enhance the creativity of our students in writing descriptive and narrative compositions, we introduce students to concrete guidelines to support their thinking, associated vocabulary to help their expression, brainstorm on topics in groups to encourage peer learning and sharing of ideas, group presentations to build confidence in generating ideas, demonstrate the written format and finally expect them to write compositions.
